A "castiza" and pure Spain, the Spain of the embryonic kingdom of Castile, land of the Christian Reconquista, legend and myth in the first capital of the Kingdom, Burgos, home to one of the most spectacular and impressive cathedrals in Europe. A magnificent white flame of the fighting spirit of a people and of History.

Day 14 Jul 2009

BURGOS

Founded in 884 by a Castilian nobleman, a military seat since always, capital of the Kingdom of Castile first and then of that of Castile-Leon, Burgos is famous for its overflowing Gothic cathedral, today an ancestral and magnificent example of a thousand architectural styles, the tomb of numerous prelates, laymen and noblemen belonging to the history of the city, but above all the sepulchre of the famous Cid Campeador, a legendary figure of medieval Spain, sung by many, a national hero under the banner of respect for the values of honour, loyalty to one's lord, freedom and preservation of Christian signs and Iberian traditions. Legend and myth, here together with his Jimena, finds its rightful rest.

Burgos has a hot but dry climate, a cool breeze helps digest the heavy cuisine of these parts, "morcilla", "quesos curados, semicurados, de oveja", delicious wines and lamb, here a prized jewel of "bugalesa" cuisine.

Green and white, parks and the majestic cathedral, a fantastic combination that brings my mind back to the Spain I have so often studied in literature books, the Spain of the Reconquista, of the "hidalgos" for honour, of beautiful and unattainable maidens, of the tragedies and exploits of this brusque and sweet, proud and elegant land; moreover rich in Gothic churches, medieval walls and narrow alleys, Burgos is also cut like butter by the memorable Camino towards Santiago, traced and travelled by many pilgrims who here as elsewhere find refreshment and rest their weary little legs!! If you pass through here, or around these parts, stop at least to admire perhaps the most beautiful cathedral that your eyes will have the fortune and pleasure to admire, an incomparable jewel, a microcosm of 85 architects, almost 8 centuries of history, of many battles, tears and loves, a symbol of the grand

eur of this land and an ancient sprout of today's Spain.
