It's a genteel little town with a very Austrian look, with brightly coloured Baroque monuments. It was redesigned after the terrible 1895 earthquake by famous architects.
Do visit the beautiful Cathedral of St Nicholas from the 1700s, which contains many interesting frescoes, and, of course, on the side of the Cathedral, the stone Giants' Portal.
Other interesting monuments are: - the Križanke: a complex founded by the Knights of the Cross (Teutonic Order) - the Ursuline Church, Ursulinska cerkev, from around 1718 - the National Museum, paid admission (the Celtic antiquities are beautiful) - the Modern Art Gallery and the National Gallery, both paid. The National Gallery, moreover, hosts the International Biennial of Graphic Arts!
