Saturday 03.08.85 Departure from Milan at 7.30 in scorching heat, along the lakes motorway. At Chiasso there is crazy traffic and it takes us an hour just to cross the border. We go over the San Bernardino Pass and drive the Via Mala in lovely cool weather: the road runs between two very high walls plunging down to the river. Then Chur, and we visit Vaduz in Liechtenstein.
At Sankt Margrethen we get a bit confused by the road signs and end up on Lake Constance, beautiful for the green colour of the water, the sheer size of this lake and the sails of the boats. A brief crossing of Austria: from Bregenz to the German border we see beautiful little houses in the greenery with masses of geraniums on the balconies. We find the same landscape in Germany, where we pass through many woods. Heading for Memmingen, Landsberg and then towards Augsburg. About 20 km from this city we find a Gasthof to spend the night; we have dinner and walk in the woods as far as the neighbouring village. Gasthof "ZUM ADLER" Ettringen, 92 DM = 62,000 lire for 4 people + breakfast
