The story

We went back to Mantua for a day, many years after the first time. And now we've promised ourselves to return as soon as possible, though by then in spring, with bicycles as a must. Walking around Mantua is very pleasant, given the beautiful pedestrian centre, the lakes it rests upon and the cycle paths that surround it. There's a vaporetto service with guided tours crossing the lakes, to enjoy a view of the city from another perspective. The effect of Piazza Sordello is beautiful, as are the Duomo and the Palazzo Ducale (Sunday 26 October, exceptionally free entry) where you can admire the famous 'Camera degli Sposi' with Mantegna's superb frescoes....; then on to Palazzo Te (we saved the visit to the interiors for the next occasion)...and then the Castle, the round church of San Lorenzo, the church of Sant'Andrea. Not to be missed: a taste of pumpkin tortelli and of sbrisolona.
