Heading for the Cinque Terre, we make a stop in Lucca, one of the main art cities of Italy, famous for its intact city walls, the same ring, transformed as early as the second half of the nineteenth century into a pleasant pedestrian promenade, still rates today as one of the best preserved in Europe. The monumental historic centre of the city has also remained almost intact in its original appearance, The main artery of the historic city is the narrow medieval via Fillungo, which brings together the city's major shops. Other evocative squares are piazza San Michele, the historic heart of the city, and piazza San Martino, the religious heart where the famous Duomo di San Martino stands. Also beautiful to visit is the church of San Frediano, and characteristic is the piazza dell'Anfiteatro.
