We decided to use a timeshare for a weekend, which would otherwise have gone unused, at Carbonin (near Dobbiaco). We left on Friday the 24th after lunch and arrived when it was already dark.
The next morning we woke early and found a fantastic sight: the mountains were all covered in snow!! The goal of the day was the Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit; when we got to the entrance of the road to drive up to the start of the trail they told us it would only open later because of the fallen snow.. what's more the toll costs a good 10 euros. (In high season there are buses but in October unfortunately not). So we decide to walk up: the trail isn't too long though quite steep, but from a certain point on it's completely snow-covered! We reach the destination but only do a small part of the Tre Cime circuit because the mountain huts are closed and we hadn't brought our lunch... We go back down along the asphalt road for cars and it really takes us ages. We stop for lunch at the Baita Rin Bianco, not the cheapest.
We're satisfied though, the strudel they bring me is out of this world! In the afternoon we pop over to Lake Misurina and take a stroll around San Candido, a slightly touristy but very characteristic little village.
On Sunday the 26th we get up early again and after equipping ourselves with a packed lunch we decide to walk trail 115 to the Fonda Savio mountain hut. It's already two days since it snowed and so the trail is icy and very slippery!! I'm a bit scared but I manage both the way there and the way back, though on some stretches "on my backside".
These two days were really great fun. The Dolomites are truly of an indescribable beauty...
