Lake Resia is in the Upper Venosta Valley, towards the border with Austria. The bell tower, which emerges from the water, dates back to the 14th century and is what remains of the villages of Curon, Resia and San Valentino, which were destroyed in 1950 for the construction of the huge artificial dam. The water level of the two natural lakes (Lake Resia and Lake Curon) was raised by 22 metres, even though the population did not agree. 677 hectares were destroyed, of which 523 were for agricultural use, and 160 buildings. Near the lake shore, a display board full of photos tells of the sadness of that exodus and those destructions that forever changed the life of the population. Being in the area, it's worth popping over to Austria......to fill up, it costs about 20% less than in Italy!
