Muggia

A small town in the small province of Trieste, on the border with what used to be Yugoslavia, which then became the Republic of Slovenia.........now the border is gone, only the empty buildings remain: it feels somewhat surreal. Very handy for filling up at € 1.05 a litre. It's pleasant to find the lion of St Mark here too. If you want to experience a particular atmosphere, go during the Muggesano Carnival; the town turns into a little Viareggio, the floats have little to envy the Versilia town, masks everywhere and cheerful bands echoing through the narrow streets.
