At Easter we often took our holidays at a lovely little hotel, small but charming and superbly run by the legendary "Irma the sweet" (in reality a general...) in Villabassa, in the area of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
From Villabassa we would set off to go skiing and to take lovely walks in the neighbouring villages: San Candido, Dobbiaco and the beautiful frozen lake (which you can skate on) of Braies.
Useful sites for Villabassa:
DESCRIPTION TAKEN FROM THE VILLABASSA WEBSITE: Gently nestled in the Upper Puster Valley, surrounded by the Dolomites, Villabassa lies in a sheltered setting and, with its favourable altitude (1,154 m) and its hours of sunshine, offers the best conditions for a restful and healthy stay. Villabassa, a high-mountain health resort, has a long tradition, for the village is one of the earliest strongholds of tourism in the Puster Valley, where several famous figures sought hospitality and rest. Villabassa, the centre of the Upper Puster Valley, set amid beautiful woods with a healthy climate, is especially suited to health retreats.
LAKE BRAIES Lake Braies is, by many accounts, the most beautiful lake in the Dolomites, with rock walls and woods plunging sheer into its bottle-green water. This so-called pearl already lies within the splendid Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. Legend tells of wild men searching for gold and precious stones. The valley's shepherds were envious and greedy, so they tried to steal the treasures. The wild men, in turn, opened the underground springs and threw all the treasure into the lake that was forming.
As for the ski lifts, you'll find all the up-to-date information on the website
They are fun and of every level of difficulty.
