A short farm-stay holiday in the hills around Siena.

Day 131 May 2003

Treviso - Certaldo

We set off from Treviso early in the morning to reach Certaldo, at an agriturismo found on the internet. The journey goes smoothly and in the early afternoon we arrive at the Agriturismo Le Tre Stelle ( We're welcomed by Mrs Maria, a typical Tuscan with a really funny accent; we settle into our rooms for a short rest.

In the afternoon we visit Certaldo Alta, a very small medieval centre, famous for having been the birthplace of Boccaccio. We take the opportunity to have a snack in a small grocery shop, with bread and Tuscan salami.

In the evening we return to the agriturismo, where we eat, in the company of the last friends to arrive, a delicious plate of tagliatelle with duck sauce and some very good homemade desserts.

The evening reaches its food-and-wine peak when the owner offers us an excellent glass of Ciliegiolo, a strong and decided red with an intense scent of cherry.

Nothing left to do but go to sleep:-)

Day 21 Jun 2003

Siena and Monteriggioni

We wake up early in the morning and have a big breakfast of homemade desserts, coffee, tea and so on; right after that we head for Siena, where Alessio acts as our guide, given the year he spent here as a soldier.

We go straight to Piazza del Campo, which as usual is already very busy; we climb the Torre del Mangia and after quite a few steps admire a stunning panorama. Right after that we visit the Duomo, of which it's impossible to take a decent photo without a wide-angle lens:-(

After wandering around the city for a while, we get in the car and head for Monteriggioni, a beautiful and very small fortified medieval centre perched on a hill.

We spend the evening as the previous one, eating and drinking merrily:-)

S. Giminiano

Morning spent in San Giminiano, a famous medieval centre. We visit the Palazzo and the Torre della Podestà, the Collegiata, and the Torture Museum.

After buying some typical Tuscan products we return to the agriturismo to collect our luggage and set off for home:-(

It was only three days, but lived intensely and happily.
