I went to Altamura twice to visit a dear friend of mine. The first time, in August, I made the (overnight) journey by bus leaving from Florence and stayed with my friend; the second time, instead, I travelled by train and slept in a hotel. In both cases it was a rather tiring journey, I think the best alternative is to travel by car! Besides, the Altamura-Bari route is not operated by the State Railways.
I had never been to southern Italy and I was amazed by the colour of the sky, truly different from how it is where I come from. In Altamura I didn't do any sightseeing but, on the other hand, taking advantage of the hospitality offered to me, I was able to taste some delicious dishes! Absolutely worth trying are the bread, the focaccia, the dairy products...there are several small markets where you can buy fruit and vegetables. A negative aspect of the town are the roads: they are broken up and there is often no signage, practically whoever jumps into the street first goes first! Even pedestrian crossings are almost non-existent...
One day I also went to Matera: it is a distinctive place even though the organisation leaves something to be desired, there are cars parked everywhere!!
