(63 km from home). Looking back over the destinations of our travels, we thought again about all the churches around the world we have entered and all those we haven't, because "but we're a stone's throw from Rome and there can't be churches more beautiful than those in Rome!" Then, though, having done the maths, we "discovered" that we had never entered the church for which people set off from the farthest corners of the world just for it: St Peter's Basilica. The interior of the basilica takes your breath away, but even more so does the view from the dome. The climb is quite demanding, but the spectacle of having Rome at your feet pays you back in full. Then a stroll through the eternal city, an open-air museum, a show worthy of applause, a standing ovation and more besides. You can travel the whole world....but Rome is always Rome!
