From Austria we head north towards Regensburg, the city on the Danube, the ancient Ratisbon. We stop to sleep at Rosenheim, at the Hotel Alpina (€90 bed and breakfast, very nice) and have dinner “at the Convent”, an incredible atmosphere. The first stop the next morning is Wasserburg, a town on a bend of the River Inn; unfortunately a light rain blurs the façades of the houses. We continue to Landshut, where again the colours of the palazzi façades are soaked by the rain. We reach Regensburg in the early afternoon and finally it stops raining.
We park the car outside the walls and venture into the old town; the pedestrian area is very large (we can't resist the sweets of a pastry shop that it would be an understatement to call fabulous!), we walk up and down the bridge crossing the Danube, on whose banks stands the oldest place selling wurstel, and we're already looking forward to dinner! We climb up to the university area and find a room at the Hotel Wiendl (€75.00); we leave the car and in 20 minutes we're in the centre, and the sun comes out too. We head for the wurstel but, surprise, everything closes at 7 pm. We opt for an excellent brewery. The following day there is fog; we go up to the Walhalla, a sort of copy of the Parthenon commissioned by the ever-present King Ludwig, but it leaves much to be desired. Heading south and a “green” stop in Munich, to walk in the Englischer Garten that we had missed years ago.
Before leaving Bavaria, another stop at Lake Starnberg, to enjoy a bowl of ice cream.
