Chambery is the capital of Savoy, a town of 50,000 inhabitants with more than 10,000 university students, enclosed by a ring of mountains that these days are capped with clouds. For late September it's already very cold. The old town is almost entirely pedestrianised, centred on the Place des Eléphants, with a very strange fountain depicting four large elephants, in honour of the Indian exploits of a citizen of Chambery. All around, narrow streets and alleys, wide avenues and busy squares wind their way, especially on weekdays. This isn't really a pleasure trip: we accompanied our son to Savoy, where he'll live for 9 months on the Erasmus programme. Coming back to collect him in June will be our goal.
