We arrive in Rabat in the late afternoon, when the sun paints everything red. The Royal Palace (always viewable only from the outside) appears majestic even here, surrounded by the "citadel" where all the service staff live, and there are a lot of them. Rabat, capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, stands on the estuary of the Bou Regreg river; it is a modern city that nevertheless preserves in its medina traces of the most ancient civilisations that succeeded one another there. It is evocative to stroll in the evening through the medina's streets and then, in some alley, step through a small doorway and discover the fabulous interiors of a private house. The mausoleum of Mohammed V is imposing; peeking through a door you can even glimpse the preciousness of its interior. In Rabat we stayed at the Hotel Chellah, central and well kept.
