On the road that leads from Fes to Meknes, after admiring boundless scenery, amid the green of the crops and the appearance here and there of sparse flocks of sheep, we reach Volubilis, a Roman city with works dating from the 2nd century BC. The archaeological site is in a satisfactory state of preservation; evocative is the Decumanus Maximus street, with the gate of Tangier in the distance. The whole place is full of mystery, set in a forceful and fascinating nature. The Arch of Triumph is dedicated to Caracalla, while the numerous mosaics that decorate the ground are at risk to their integrity. 3 km from Volubilis is the little town of Moulay Idriss, with the mosque that is a pilgrimage destination. Another 25 km and you reach Meknes, enclosed by an enormous wall with monumental gates, set among hills adorned with vineyards.
Splendid is the gate Bab El Mansour, finely decorated, as are the interiors of the museum.
