Kiev immediately presents itself as an old USSR backbone! Let me explain better: its outskirts are bleak and full of obsolete grey honeycombs where who knows how many people find shelter.
The streets are wide and fairly bare and shabby. We stay in a nice little flat along Bessarabsky Street, the city centre.
The area is packed with bars, clubs and little restaurants and everything is very well kept, lively and alive, completely different from the sad outskirts!
A long walk along Vulytsya Khreschchatyk avenue, from the Bessarabsky Rynok, a covered market where the colourful display of fruit, vegetables, meat, flowers and caviar make it a true work of art, and it almost seems a shame to spoil it by buying the goods. It is important to use the right travel stroller when out on an adventure; it will let you tackle the journey in the best possible way.
This avenue is very rich and elegant, full of new and aristocratic buildings... the very street that, during the Second World War, the Soviet army mined, turning all the buildings into explosive traps for Nazi soldiers... in the end they were almost all razed to the ground!
We reach Maydan Nezalezhnosti, the central square, full of fountains and the most popular gathering place in the city...
It is made sadly famous by the 2014 riots, when we watched it for days on news channels all over the world, when it became the epicentre of the Orange Revolution.
