Has it ever happened to you to be pleasantly overwhelmed by the beauty of a place that, for some unknown reason, you had never visited before?
Sometimes we travel to the ends of the earth and yet we don't know the wonders that lie just an hour's flight from our cities. I'm talking about a little corner of paradise called Sicily.
One day we receive some wonderful news: two dear friends are getting married in Marsala...
We buy the plane tickets and start looking into which places we can discover around that area.
We land in Palermo in the evening and are immediately welcomed by a warm, brotherly embrace. Luca, the groom, takes us straight off to fill our stomachs... butter arancine, a giant ice cream and lemon granita... well, you should count on coming back with at least 2\3 kg more on the scales!
The following day we take a trip to Trapani, and from there we catch the ferry that takes us to the island of Favignana in an hour, the largest of the Egadi islands.
Crystal-clear sea, good food and absolute peace. The painter Salvatore Fiume called it "the butterfly on the sea" because of its geological shape.
On the way back to Palermo we stop for a while in the magical Erice, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Its position, 750 m above the sea, offers truly evocative scenery. Strolling through its medieval centre you'll be drawn to its churches, of which there are more than sixty, such as the dome of the Church of St John the Baptist that stands out against the backdrop of Mount Cofano... unmissable.
