A lovely week at the end of June... and I really mean it, since here in Tuscany until two days before we left it felt like January....

Day 122 Jun 2008

Menorca was a destination chosen somewhat by chance....let's say it's the least known of the Balearics and so it's unlikely that your mind would land there for a vacation....at least that was the case for me......I chose it because I had exactly one week...from Sunday to Sunday so I had to rule out destinations with midweek flights...(I don't think it's right to have flights departing on weekdays like Tuesday...Thursday....and what's someone with exactly one week like me supposed to do??? I have very little choice for taking a trip....ugh...who agrees with me? sorry for the little vent)...BUT.....I chose really well! We were staying at the ALMIRANTE FARRAGUT hotel in Cala en Forcat...a very beautiful hotel, I'd say spectacular because it's right on the edge of a cliff dropping straight down to the sea, with this myriad of straw umbrellas throughout the garden all around the pool...some ev

en on the terraces that go down to the sea....and then very comfortable rooms with balcony and air conditioning....a few minutes' walk away there are shops, bars, pubs and everything you want to spend an evening...otherwise a few minutes by car there's CIUTADELLA, the ancient capital of the island.....very beautiful the seafront with all its little restaurants on the port....and then going up a staircase we find ourselves in the old town...with its cathedral and its alleys full of shops and little restaurants...a very beautiful town to see! So I'll list what there is to visit in my opinion, premising that: almost all the beaches have a good parking lot and a little bit to walk through the woods...the parking is almost never paid and often there are even parking attendants who help you find a spot...the cell phone doesn't get signal on almost all the beaches (I have Vodafone) since many ar

e coves at the end of a long inlet of high cliffs.... - PLATGES D'ALGAIARENS: beautiful and long beach, it's a nature reserve...clear water and not very crowded beach....surrounded by the red rocks of Menorca (the color of the earth isn't our brown but red...see photo). - CALA MORELL: another quiet little cove but a bit smaller and with pebbles - CALA MACARELLA: one of the most famous beaches and therefore also one of the most frequented and thus more chaotic...if you follow a walking path for another twenty minutes or so you get to MACARELLETA, the smaller and wilder little sister but ATTENTION mostly frequented by nudists... -CALA EN TURQUETA: another beautiful beach among the most famous so same as above...

- CALA GALDANA a beautiful beach located in Santa Galdana, a tourist resort with several 4- and 5-star hotels...that have somewhat ruined the paradise-like scenery of this beach (visible from above from a viewpoint very well indicated by road signs called "el mirador") -SANT TOMAS AND SON BOU: very long white beaches and here you also find lidos with umbrellas and sunbeds...a bit less wild I'd say... - SA MESQUIDA: this beach doesn't deserve much....so I wouldn't waste a day...there are many others -CALA DE FORNELLS: I haven't been but from what I understand these are somewhat rockier beaches or with pebbles...FORNELLS instead is a nice little town to go for a stroll in the evening...you could have dinner in one of the little restaurants on the port and then take a walk on the seafront or on the main street. It's a fishing village so very small.

- CALA EN PORTER: here too, more than for the beach, the place is famous for its nightclub on the edge of the sea...see photo...it's nice to go for an aperitif or a drink in the evening...it's considered quite an attraction since there are people of all ages who visit it and not just young people going to dance -CALA MITJANA: the number one on the podium for me is this beach....a large cliff on the left dominates the beach...many people also go diving from up there...it's very high....in this cliff there's a cave where a family of I don't know what origin (but certainly not European) sells fresh fruit...they slice it for you right there and if you want coconut you can even drink its milk just cracked open....a healthy and refreshing lunch...

the sea below this cliff is very shallow...it comes up to mid-calf and the nice thing is that the sand is very white and smooth...so you can walk quite a while as if you were in a pool....the water has spectacular colors and if you want to see a spectacle of nature you have to continue on foot along a path for about 10 minutes and you arrive at a little cove where the beach is truly tiny, but there are fairly large rocks where you can put your things and lay out your towel...it doesn't matter if you're a sand lover..there you'll be in the water anyway...it's so beautiful and the scenery is so beautiful that it feels like you're on some island who knows where..and so the last thing that comes to mind is lying down!!! It's the number one beach for me...

A very important thing...the nudism phenomenon in Menorca is always around the corner....I mean...in these somewhat secluded coves even more so...but...even on the most famous and therefore most crowded beaches and maybe with lots of families with small children....someone will always come along who'll strip completely naked and happily stand there with all their bits in the wind...men and women alike..they like naturism....me a bit less...in fact personally it bothered me a bit and if I'd had a small child even more....! GO THERE...it really deserves it...sometimes people take grueling 10-hour flights to find a "Caribbean" sea and instead we could manage with an hour and a half......only the palm trees are missing!!! BYE!
