07.08.2004 Belgrade (SERBIA) A travel agency sells trips on instalments... Yesterday, strolling through the centre of Belgrade, we met a delightful girl named Marija and her friend Lepa, and today we went to lunch with them in a local little restaurant. Against all expectations these girls treated us to the whole lunch. We really didn't expect it, and in fact I even felt embarrassed, thinking with my friends that the restaurant thing was just the classic little trick to get us to spend a lot of money at some relative of theirs (ed. note: as later happened to us in Cuba).
To digest we took a nice walk along the "Ada" river (a parallel of the Danube)... what a paradise! Among those wonderful girls in swimsuits... we felt like three ugly ducklings!
[Marija Marijanovic from Belgrade]: "Verujemo da cete doci ponovo da posetite grad u kome mi zivimo!" (Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever...!)
[Sergio]: Here people live day by day, and that's exactly the beauty of it! Every moment can hold some pleasant situation and maybe some special encounter... Oh how lovely! There's a ray of sun lighting up a gloomy day here in Belgrade. This morning it rained a lot and the city seemed even more wrapped in that veil of melancholy and sadness you glimpse in the eyes of its inhabitants... You shouldn't be surprised, though: these are people who have lived through a war first-hand, one that still leaves many open wounds and that only time will be able to heal...
[Luca]: What can I say about the richness of spirit of Marija, Ana, Lepa, Jovana etc... We are the poor ones, who behind a nice pair of eyes, legs, breasts or bottom see the "easy girl"; then you meet these who tell you about real suffering... and you can't do anything but feel "different", but it's not pity: it's wonder, yes, I looked at them with wonder because I feel there's still a river of life to learn from!
