Scandinavia up to the Arctic Circle, all by train. A journey lasting a month through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. As far as Rovaniemi, the town of Santa Claus, in the cold of northern Europe.
Day 19 Sep 1990
After crossing the whole of Sweden in a single night, we arrive in Oslo. On the train we meet Robert Z., an Australian guy with Italian parents, who speaks Italian. He'll stay with us for almost the whole trip. In Oslo it's freezing cold, and I buy gloves and a scarf. Oslo is a strange city, all new because it has caught fire a few too many times, and a few too many times they've had to put it back on its feet. There's a lot of wood in Oslo, and nice neighbourhoods, but I don't keep any particular memory of it, I didn't see anything that really struck me. We leave it after two days, to do the tour of the fjords. The first stop is Bergen, then Trondheim.

Day 211 Sep 1990
In Trondheim we stay in a nice hostel packed with young people, we meet an American who's in Europe at a NATO base, and now he's taking a few days of vacation. He's definitely big and when we go to Hell, the most beautiful fjord in the area, he falls behind. But then we all find each other again, eating tins in the grass, talking in a mix of Italian and English that makes everyone laugh. After the coloured wooden houses of Trondheim we arrive in Narvik, in the extreme north of Norway.

Day 313 Sep 1990
From Narvik we set off for the North Cape, by bus. A long and tiring journey, but fascinating. The cold is more and more intense, but the memory of that place, and of that sea, will never leave us. Our adventure in Norway is about to end, from the North Cape we turn south, towards Sweden.
