18. 08. 1999 Luxembourg (LUXEMBOURG)
Arriving in the heart of the night in the Luxembourg capital we notice we are the only ones around besides another little couple of interrailers... The two Italians and the two Austrians try in vain to reach a campsite to spend the night. There are no more buses. What to do? The lovely Ancle suggests a Luxembourg City by night tour. We all accept! We leave our backpacks in the station's left luggage and start wandering the streets of the city, empty and silent at that hour. Towards one o'clock a rainstorm begins to rage... It is cold. We shelter under a bus stop then decide to return to the station but it is closed. We manage to get in through a secondary entrance but the ticket inspector chases us off rudely. It is 4 and it opens. I immediately grab my backpack and put on a pair of long trousers and a sweatshirt.
We fall asleep at once, each on his own backpack, missing the train that would have taken us to Paris!
19. 08. 1999 Paris (FRANCE)
The first thing we do on arriving in Paris is go straight to the Eiffel Tower. We have lunch in a little park and then lie down to rest right beneath the monument that symbolises France, which seen from here is not so impressive! We are really tired... We notice it from every little thing... but there is always time to savour new adventures and so we are already thinking about the next one. Going to Spain without a ticket!
20. 08. 1999 San Sebastian (SPAIN)
Amano. A 23-year-old Japanese heading to Bilbao for a holiday before going to study architecture in Moscow. He had got lost and we helped him, a new companion of adventures for the Spanish leg! In this quiet Basque town there are posters and stickers everywhere against Spain and in favour of Basque independence! It feels like being in a Latin Belfast... These Spaniards are very nationalistic, few speak English, perhaps because they are busy studying Basque, which is extremely difficult! Who knows! How strange to be sitting on this summer beach after a month of rain, wind, fog and cold! [Paolo from Vercelli, Italy]: Interrail tires your body, frees your mind, smokes up your lungs and only those with a stainless liver survive. You live Interrail inside, you carry the journey with you, your backpack is your home, the road your tomorrow. All men die, not all men truly live.
