We carry on and in an hour we are in Klaipeda, in Lithuania. How strange to cross the Latvia-Lithuania border with no checks at all. Customs looked like an abandoned motorway toll booth — that border where, years ago, they almost confiscated my camera over a photo…
On board a boat we reach the dolphinarium, the most important in the Baltic countries, according to my friends. It put on a very polished show. Well done.
Before leaving Lithuania we stop at Palanga. A very touristy town with a long pedestrian avenue full of little shops for tourists, kiddie rides… and right here we run into a very unusual procession. A long, colourful and cheerful Hindu parade was filing down the street… after having been in Sri Lanka, it felt strange to see blonde, blue-eyed girls there wearing saris and dancing as if they were from the East… What struck me most was their expression, their relaxed, happy faces; they seemed at peace with the world!
