Ours was a last-minute departure... we were heading for Sharm... but the day before booking a series of planes crash... and we preferred a quieter trip and to return to our Sardinia, even though I've been there so many times.... but after CALA GONONE, ARBATAX, PORTO FRAILES, TEMPIO PAUSANIA I decide to look for an apartment in the north-east... and we landed on the beautiful Stintino....

Day 117 Aug 2004

Stintino is a small town in the northeastern part of Sardinia...as far as nightlife goes it doesn't have much...there are little bars along the seafront where you can have a quiet drink...but for proper clubs you have to move to the area of Stintino's most famous beach called LA PELOSA... or to nearby Alghero, which offers plenty of entertainment options.

There are also nice little restaurants in the harbor area of Stintino...really a very lovely setting.

As for beaches, the most famous one is indeed La Pelosa... also lovely to reach with a short swim is the tower on a small islet just in front. The most daring (myself included) usually climb this tower...which is made entirely of big rocks...you need a good grip because you really have to step on the rocks to get up to a window that's about three or four meters high...after that, once inside the window there's a staircase that leads you to the top of the tower where you can take in a beautiful view of the whole beach.

In the surroundings there are many beaches because Stintino sits at the tip of a narrow, long strip of land...as if it were a peninsula...so there are beaches both on the right and on the left.

Very beautiful to visit is the island of Asinara, which lies right in front of Stintino...there are boats that leave specifically to take tourists over....it's an organized visit though, because Asinara is a nature reserve and so you certainly can't swim wherever you want...there are guides who follow you from the moment you arrive until you leave...they show you the little village, take you on a tour in beat-up little minibuses, and have you visit the old prison, explaining its history down to the last detail....finally they take you to a beautiful beach where they let you stay a couple of hours to relax.

We also made a quick trip to La Maddalena...too bad we hit a particularly windy day and so it was almost impossible to stay on many of the beaches. The little town is very lovely and cozy with its main street, chic shops and absolute tidiness. That said, I had been here a few days a couple of years ago and the sea has wonderful colors and stunning beaches. It's worth visiting.

All in all....this vacation was a success too!
