For the ritual winter ski week I've chosen Val Gardena... after touring all of Trentino, a quick trip to South Tyrol seems the least I could do...

Day 127 Jan 2008

My winter skiing week in 2008, after much searching, ended up in Ortisei in Val Gardena...after some friends of ours recommended it...and I must say I did well to follow their advice! We chose a beautiful hotel in the centre, right in the pedestrian area...so we had everything within reach...in the evening too...after those immense meals we had....to burn off a bit...we'd go out for a walk....or before dinner...we could go out and have an aperitif in a very nice little wine bar along the promenade...The hotel is called HOTEL MARIA and I highly recommend it because it's nice, clean, the food is good, the owners are friendly and welcoming, and, not to be underestimated at all....you can reach the ski lifts on foot in 5 minutes at most.

On one side is the departure point of the cable car to go skiing on the Alpe di Siusi, and right behind the hotel there's the escalator that takes you up to the Seceda, from where there are all the connections to do the whole Sella Ronda circuit...I won't explain what that is...if whoever's reading is a skier like me, they know what I'm talking about. Also, affiliated with the hotel is the municipal swimming pool.....where there's an indoor pool and an outdoor one with very warm water.....it's wonderful to swim in the outdoor pool with all the snow around you...it's strange to have photos in the snow in a swimsuit.... The bakery in the photo is a must for anyone going to Ortisei...inside there's everything and more...the best things in the world, even to take home as a souvenir or as a gift.

On the way back from Val Gardena you can stop for lunch in Bolzano or Trento, or, as we did, stop in Valpolicella to drink Amarone and take a trip to Verona... Kisses
