Travelling is wonderful... sometimes we travel to faraway countries to find a splendid sea and who knows what.... and yet we underestimate places in our own beautiful country that are sometimes truly not far from us... I RECOMMEND EVERYONE GO TO THE ISLAND OF GIGLIO... you will leave your heart there... as I did.

Day 11 Jan 2008

This is a small island off the Argentario on the southern coast of Tuscany.....this is a little island that you can tour by scooter or by bus if you like...but which you can also do on foot, enjoying some indescribable views.....this is an island where you don't go for nightlife, but where you go to enjoy the sea, to relax...this is an island with crystal-clear sea....from the ferry moored in the port, you can see the seabed without any problem....this is an island that has an atmosphere of peace and where you breathe an air that I can't breathe in any other place I've been. There's a special air on the Isola del Giglio....there are few beaches, each more beautiful than the last, and in an hour you can go around the island by boat.

Among the paths you can take to reach some of the beaches, you can discover some beautiful spots with enormous rocks that slope gently into the sea and where you can lie down two centimetres from the water and spend a wonderful day. You can see one of these in the photos too...going from the port to Le Cannelle you can find a corner of paradise. There are three main villages, or rather towns: GIGLIO PORTO, GIGLIO CAMPESE, and GIGLIO CASTELLO....Giglio Porto is the liveliest one...a beauuuutiful seafront full of grocery shops and typical little shops on one side and full of little restaurants built on stilts over the sea on the other. Then there are the two piers...the red lighthouse pier is the longer one, where you can take a nice walk on foot and see all the little houses in a thousand colours along the seafront.

Giglio Campese is another tourist spot where there's a long sandy beach....it's full of residences, but apart from a few little bars, there's not much to do in the evening....Giglio Castello, on the other hand, is very beautiful....it's a real castle with its fortress....its alleys and its typical little restaurants are beautiful and characteristic. Anyway, the area I recommend for staying is the Porto. From Giglio you can also reach the island of Giannutri in a short time, which is a Marine Nature Park....depending on where you are, you can't even swim. The Isola del Giglio isn't such a renowned place in Italy, but who knows why it's always full of people...to book an apartment you have to move well in advance..sometimes in April there's already nothing left.

Every time I go I can't leave without crying...I'm silly, I know....but there's something magical about that island for me, and it's the only place where I'd always want to stay. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU GO — the Caribbean is a stone's throw from us...and without a ten-hour flight....!!!

PS.....Selene, I hope I've convinced you...kisses
