When I think of where to spend a weekend, numerous art cities come to mind, and sometimes to reach them I pass by Pomposa. This time I promise myself to make it the destination of my mini holiday. I decide to stay at an agriturismo on the Po delta to eat local, genuine food and sleep spending relatively little. From where I'm staying I can reach the abbey on foot! The thing that immediately catches my eye is the slender bell tower erected in 1063, but far older is the basilica of Santa Maria with three naves and its beautiful floor with marble inlays. On the upper floor I find the Museo Pomposiano, which houses frescoes and other architectural works from the monastic complex. I continue the visit of the abbey with the fresco cycle of the refectory and conclude with the Palazzo della Ragione, which stands apart from the abbey. Suggestive is the hour of sunset!
