Altamura is a municipality of 67,599 inhabitants in the province of Bari.
It is known for producing a typical type of bread, made from re-milled durum wheat semolina, which has been granted D.O.P. (protected designation of origin) status and is sold in many parts of Italy.
It is also famous in Puglia for its fine Frederick II cathedral, a successful synthesis of the many styles and layers that have followed one another over time. Situated in the heart of the Murge, it enjoys a rather mild climate in the summer, which is why we chose it for an evening stroll to escape the heat of late July. The old town is elegant and well kept and the little town is certainly worth a visit. From Bari you reach it via the SS96, a road that is not exactly considered safe along its entire length.
