From Pinerolo, a place along the Chisone valley where a military structure dating back to the 1700s stands, once freely open to raids, today a restoration of industrial archaeology that has allowed us to preserve and hand down to people the memory of a bygone age... they say that from this fort a single cannon shot was fired that shattered the bell tower of the nearby village, perhaps more to strike fear than... There are three possible tours, all with a guide; the first covers the central core of the fort in the lower part, together with its little church. The second runs along the mountain for about 500 m of elevation gain up to the first stage, climbing through tunnels that protected the soldiers. The third climbs all the way to the top of the mountain at 2,000-2,500 m, and takes a whole day.
In any case it's very fascinating to discover the military engineering, and the skill in building works that may seem absurd today but were then necessary for their purpose, in this case defence. In the lower part you can get refreshments or even have lunch at the local eatery, quite good and not expensive... have a good trip, everyone.
