A classic family outing on a late-summer Sunday. In Puglia the wind was very strong, and we worried about the ferry, considering it was the first time! We set off at dawn while it was still dark towards Sorrento, of which we weren't destined to see much apart from the port and a nearby bar where we had a quick breakfast of cornetto and cappuccino. Early in the morning, just after the sun had risen, we took the ferry to Capri. The sea was rough and we bounced around a bit because the boat was small. On board I met an American girl, Kim, who was coming to Capri for a painting internship. Once we landed at the port we headed for the funicular, and I ran into Kim again, and we met once more on a bus. In Capri the weather was wonderful, sunny with lots of English and American tourists.
A glance at the little shops full of costume jewellery, T-shirts and lemons, the splendid Villa San Michele of Axel Munthe, the Quisisana hotel. Near the little square where we sat to have an ice cream, some English tourists asked me for directions to the beach and I (back then I was still studying) didn't miss the chance to show off what I knew. A shame our stay was only a few hours! In the late afternoon we had to catch a ferry back to Sorrento. We drove along a stretch of the coast before joining the A16. The last-minute holidaymakers and those returning from day trips filled every lane. We got home a bit later than planned, but with the spell of Capri still with us (even though so many years have passed!)
