Before reaching Siena, at the Orte exit we decide to pass through Orvieto, an Umbrian town famous for its splendid cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic art, beautiful both outside and inside thanks to the works of the finest artists who adorn it. But Orvieto, a town perched on a tufa rock, isn't famous only for this. The medieval town hall, the enchanting historic centre, the lesser churches (we visited the church of San Francesco, entrusted to volunteer custodians who act as guides for tourists) and St Patrick's Well. Unfortunately our very short stay (about two hours, between 5 and 7 pm) wasn't enough to see everything, but we certainly promise ourselves we'll return, because it's definitely worth it — among other things, for anyone used to the plains like us, the steep walks of Orvieto are very, very good for your health:-)))
