The story
Montecatini is worth stopping in, both in the lower part (Montecatini Terme) with its early-1900s hotels, its well-kept parks and indeed its spa. But it's also worth taking the little red train up to Montecatini Alto, for a visit to the old village and to stop in the village's little square at one of the restaurants that serve you a tagliata that's out of this world: strictly Chianina tagliata. Obviously the Fiorentina and the fabulous first courses too mean that (even the passing tourist) stops to visit these places between the Versilia sea and the gates of Florence. And now that it's come back on the bone, the Tuscans are getting their taste back!!
