After several holidays in Spain, a country we adore, for once we decided to try a change and opted for Greece, so loved by several of our friends and colleagues. Among the myriad of islands, choosing is really hard, but with 2 weeks available and fearing that too small an island might bore us, we decide to go to Crete. Having time off at the end of July/beginning of August, and with this being the year of the Olympics, which this year are being held in Greece itself, we don't trust going off on our own, so we rely on our usual travel agency. We avoid going to Hersonissos, which is a bit the Rimini of Crete, and prefer a small town, also on the north coast, that's definitely quieter; obviously the offers available at the agency played their part too...
Even with a fixed base, we tried to see as much of the island as possible, partly using local transport and partly with a hire car (my advice is to go to the local agencies, which are cheaper, but be very careful about all the terms and conditions!!!). As for places to see, there's an embarrassment of riches, so I won't list them all; you'll see some in the photos I'm attaching, but the island really is big and some places we simply can't reach. We've set ourselves to come back to Crete to visit the part we're missing and to return to some places we really loved, but next time we'll do a fly & drive!!!
