The story

WITH THE CAMPER IN POLAND, LITHUANIA, LATVIA, ESTONIA From 3 to 27 September 2010..........................omissis.................We enter Poland at Bogatynia, the road that skirts the border with Germany is not among the finest, it is narrow and passes through tiny border villages that are quite ugly and remind us of the old Yugoslavia of 1968. No, this road is not to be recommended..we arrive at Zgorzelec where we can take the new dual carriageway that connects Dresden to Wroclaw............................omissis.............The old town of Riga, while keeping intact the medieval urban fabric that develops around the church of St. Peter, boasts such a quality and quantity of Art Nouveau buildings that it has no equal in the world. Riga Cathedral is the largest medieval church in the Baltic countries but on Mondays all churches are closed so we see them from the outside.

We begin the visit from the House of the Blackheads, near the museum of the occupation with a statue in memory of the Latvian riflemen. Having passed the Swedish Gate we are in the most important street. Many people are sitting at the tables of the bars while the squares are invaded by artisans' stalls. The colourful houses with strange shapes are beautiful, particularly the 3 adjoining houses called the "three brothers". Having reached the square where beautiful Art Nouveau palaces coexist with medieval dwellings we notice the "cat house", so called because it has iron cats on the pinnacles of its roof.
