26 March Road Town (BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS)

The constant breath of the trade winds caresses a channel scattered with islands, lapped by weak currents and hundreds of sheltered bays.

During his second voyage to the Caribbean, Christopher Columbus was led by the Caribs to an archipelago of unspoilt islands which he called "Santa Ursula y las once mil vírgenes", in honour of a 4th-century princess raped and killed by the Huns. Saint Ursula remains an important symbol even today, so much so that she is even represented on the local flag.

A hundred years later, the English pirates Sir Francis Drake and Jack Hawkins began to use these islands as a base during their attacks on Spanish ships.

Then came the French corsairs and the Dutch buccaneers; it was known that these islands possessed some of the safest and most unguarded ports of the West Indies. In the end, many places became notorious pirate dens.

I was rather disappointed by Road Town, the capital, which really has little to offer the curious visitor.

Wandering around the centre we saw the walls of HM Prison, the 18th-century prison, a veritable fortress used as a jail where at night one often hears the voices and music coming from the cells of the prisoners listening to the radio.
