When in 1493 Christopher Columbus sighted the island, during his second voyage to the New World, he christened it "San Cristóbal", later shortened to St Kitts.
To give a name to the nearby island: Nevis, Columbus drew on the Spanish word "nieves" (snow), perhaps because the clouds covering its mountains reminded him of the snow-capped peaks of the European mountains.
With a private van we set off to discover this small island. We follow one of the only two roads present, on one side the Caribbean Sea, on the other the majestic Atlantic Ocean.
We venture onto a path immersed in living and impenetrable nature where, every now and then, one glimpses some little monkey, an endemic and fairly common animal.
We visit what, in the past, had been a rum distillery and of which, now, only old ruins remained in the shade of avocado trees or coconut palms.
Nicholas, our driver, tells us that in the area south of the island they are starting to build resorts, hotels and golf clubs... a bit like in Aruba... We hope they don't ruin too quickly this island which seems to keep its tropical and non-globalised identity from mass tourism.
