The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a state in Southeast Asia. It borders China, Laos, Cambodia and the Gulf of Tonkin. Its area is about 331,688 square kilometres. The territory is characterised by 80% hills and mountains with dense vegetation, while only the remaining 20% consists of flat areas. In the north of the country there are plateaus and the Red River delta; the south is divided between the depressions near the coast, the Giai Truong Son mountain range (with high plateaus), and the Mekong River delta. The climate is tropical and monsoonal with an average humidity of 84% and a temperature that ranges through the year between 5°C and 37°C. Rainfall varies between 120 and 300 cm.
