19.02.2012 Kuala Lumpur (MALAYSIA)

Khizanif, our local contact who hosts us in the Malaysian capital, lives just outside Kuala Lumpur, on a hill that looks right onto the city skyline. Now we are sitting on the veranda and the spectacle we enjoy from here leaves us literally open-mouthed. The whole city by night illuminated and in the centre the world-famous “Twin Towers” or “Petronas Towers” which have become the symbol of the nation's progress.

20.02.2012 Kuala Lumpur (MALAYSIA)

Our day today begins right from the Petronas Towers. On leaving the metro we are caught by a sudden downpour and find shelter by chance in a wonderful Chinese pagoda… A little later we are already out and about… we decide to visit the Sikh temple “Tatt Khalsa”, the largest Sikh temple in South East Asia which gathers about 75,000 faithful and offers free food every day to anyone who passes by. After the trip to India I admit I remained strongly intrigued by this culture or religion or philosophy, call it what you want, these figures with long beards, always covered heads and big hearts who follow the teachings of the sacred book of the “Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji”.

The National Museum was a bit disappointing; Malaysia has a great and long history ranging from prehistoric finds to the period of the Portuguese, Dutch and British conquerors up to contemporary technological evolution, a pity that it is not well represented!

21.02.2012 Kuala Lumpur (MALAYSIA)

We wake up very lazily today… The kind Khizanif suggests a tour of KL by car, Japanese-style! We stop, take a few photos and set off again for the next destination! We thus visit the imposing “Batu Caves”, a Hindu temple carved into the rock and reached only after climbing an entire hill; the royal palace and we discover that in Malaysia there are 9 royal families, depending on the various regions, and they reign on a five-year rotation; the colourful independence square up to the club of its members MCOBA (Malaysia College Old Boys association) where we spend a few hours chatting with many of his friends of all ages!

22.02.2012 Sandakan (MALAYSIA)

A three-hour flight takes us to Sandakan, in the Sabah region of the island of Borneo. How many adventure and action novels we have read about this enchanted place characterised by an impenetrable rainforest and an immense heritage of flora and fauna. The humidity is 97% so it is rather tiring to move around without getting soaked in sweat, you feel lazy and listless, this is the classic tropical climate that goes perfectly with this place! Sandakan is still far from mass tourism and people are happy to see tourists around, often we are stopped just to hear: “Hi, how are you?” The atmosphere is very characteristic and recalls that of a distant city of pirates and sailors where something rarely happens!
