Day 12 Jul 2010
Gili...
We set off early in the morning with an impeccable Blue Water Express service from Benoa harbor and arrived at Gili Trawangan after about 2 hours of fast sailing aboard a boat with two 300-horsepower engines!!! The services were all booked online (and, included in the price (120 euros each) there is also the transfer to and from the hotel as well as the seasickness pill (.. colored like Viagra it makes you incredibly sleepy)!!!!!! The arrival at Gili Trawangan is a unique emotion..you land like Robinson Crusoe on the beach, feet in the water and the 360-degree view immediately gives images of palms, turquoise water, Lombok in the distance…. The true beauty of these islands, Trawangan has two little sisters Gili Meno and Gili Air, is the total absence of cars and scooters.
A return to nature, a true oasis of peace, these islands in fact use only the cidomo, a cart pulled by a pony for land transport (approx. 5 euros) as well as bicycles. We get on one of these carts and have ourselves taken to the Dreamvillage… here Angelo, one of the owners, waits for us..
he welcomes us and immediately makes us feel at ease!!! One of the strong emotions in fact that we brought back with us from this trip was the fact of always feeling like we were at home in this faraway country… the people, the nature, the slow rhythms but in perfect harmony with the vacation were truly a tonic after a long stressful period of work!!! Who is Angelo… Angelo is a character, a gentle person, who after many adventures and experiences around the world decided to settle from Genoa to the Gili offering his guests what he would always have wanted to find on his travels!!! His little monkey Lulù is known all over the world….
Like all the Italians met here, he is a person who loves his country Italy, only that he didn't find the right balance to be able to realize his dreams…here in Trawangan the Dreamvillage is precisely the realization of his dream!!! The resort is beautiful, the location is excellent (just outside the chaos), it is clean and offers focused but good quality services (it doesn't have a TV)… the price-service combination is not perfectly balanced if compared to other facilities, but I was comfortable there!!!! The island or rather the islands are surrounded by turquoise waters, Gili Trawangan is the most populated and rowdy, Gili Meno was my favorite and Gili Air..
the in-between!!! Twice a day a ferry service reaches the three islands from Trawangan..the legendary public… with about 2 euros each you go from one side to the other covering about 10 minutes of sailing per leg, the boats are wooden and the life jacket is considered optional never seen before!!! The sea is wonderful, but be careful the current is really strong…despite the distance between one island and the other being short you should never attempt to swim across this stretch of sea… Life here is a sea life…you delight in swimming in the warm turquoise waters (27 degrees), you take walks along the white and isolated beaches …. The local people are very cordial and the children know how to give unique emotions with their smile!!! Among the various reference points we discovered two wonderful realities: the Blu d'Amare and the Danima Resort.
Two resorts run by Italians respectively by Alessandra the first and by Daniela and Pancrazio the second. These people besides giving what nature already offers to visitors, gave us wonderful moments… Alessandra cooks very well… nicknamed "the General" she is a woman who by herself moved to this new reality and if we consider that Indonesia is the most populated Muslim country in the world… the general has courage to spare!!!! Excellent her cake of the day… not to mention the gnocchi strictly made at home!!!! Another reality Daniela and Pancrazio… two young people from Vigevano, two friends who materialized a love that lasted for years towards this country by building the Danima Resort… a truly beautiful structure with spacious rooms and first-rate service… It seems that all the Italians here are great cooks….
The fact is that the linguine of the Danima are still in our thoughts from how good they were!!!!! The marine life of these islands is very much alive and I, as a good scuba-diver, chose to avail myself of the services of Trawangan Dive… a well-kept and well-organized diving center!!! In the depths, turtles and white-tip sharks are very common as well as the smaller creatures such as seahorses, pipefish and many crustaceans!!!! Beautiful the encounter with the white and black sea snakes….
They are not at all dangerous if not molested, the sea snake in fact has a very small mouth opening that does not allow it to bite like the other land cousins so the bite from these splendid and sinuous animals happens only if man goes looking for it!!!!! Among the various dive sites I mention Deep Halik, deep Turbo, a dive in a panic current….Hans reef and Hidden reef as well as Shark point and Sunset!!!! The eastern part of the three islands is the best part both for diving and for sunbathing, while the western part is the destination to admire the sunset… logically accompanied by an ice-cold Bintag!!! After 15 days of carefree relaxation … our adventure ends, giving us unique emotions and an apparent calm that makes us reflect!!!! We are almost stunned at having reappropriated our serenity, at having seen a smile always present on our faces….
Maybe the frenetic life we live in our country or maybe the joy of these people met in Indonesia..who knows…the fact is that sooner or later we…will go back!!!!
