08. 11. 2009 Kabul (AFGHANISTAN)
Returning to Kabul wasn't very pleasant... During the flight I couldn't sleep a wink and even though I'd reached my room, between one thing and another I couldn't rest... In the evening I went to the hospital to say goodbye to my Portuguese nurse friends who were leaving...
The first thing I see and that strikes me is a beautiful Afghan child laughing and joking with Olavo; he's in a wheelchair and all dirty... He turns towards me and I notice he doesn't have a leg... My goodness... My heart tightened, he couldn't have been more than ten years old and when I ask Joana what had happened to him, she simply replies: "That's Afghanistan"!
During the night I wake up drenched in sweat... I can barely phone Paoletto because I find myself in the bathroom vomiting... A few seconds later I see everything go black and when I open my eyes again: Paoletto, Dido and a Spaniard are shaking me trying to bring me round...
I'm deathly pale, they take me to hospital... I have a fever of 39.5, vomiting, diarrhoea... The very kind and expert Fernando Conha gives me a drip while a French doctor examines me... I was in pieces and having to answer three thousand questions in English... What a bad feeling when at one point my breathing became heavier and heavier, they reassured me saying it was the effect of the drip... I was afraid, I thought: "Damn, am I going to die in Afghanistan?"
Two days of rest in my room and I have the feeling I'm feeling better...
Unfortunately only the feeling...
