The story

We land on Sal in the evening and are transferred to the village in a ramshackle minibus.. The next morning, at last, the first contact with the beach...the sand is fine and very light, the water is decidedly blue and the ocean always rough, because of the wind and the currents. In the period when we visited, the climate was still cool; often the wind forced us to shelter inside the village, but out of the wind the sun beats down like crazy!! The salt pans of Pedra de Lume, inside an old volcano crater, are typical of the island of Sal. The natural pools have salt water 30 times saltier than the sea, which lets you float without ever going under!! Palmeira is a small town with a port where you can “barter” typical local objects. Doing a tour of the island, a stop at Burracona, in the far north of the island, is unmissable, a cliff that creates a sort of big pools bathed by the ocean...

Espargos is the island's capital, where the traditional local little market is based. It is very small but allows you to immerse yourself in local life! Evening/nightlife offers four hops in discos, there are a couple in the Santa Maria area (far south of the island): the Pirata, small and much frequented by the locals; and the Birimbao, on the beach, is frequented above all by tourists staying in the villages.

A trip worth taking.
