The Xixuau-Xiparina region, extending about 200 thousand hectares and located 500 km north of the city of Manaus, is entirely protected and managed by the Associação Amazonia, a Brazilian non-profit organisation working for the preservation of the rainforest and for the improvement of the quality of life of the local population through sustainable development projects, including ecotourism.
The region, entirely covered by primary forest, in parts unexplored, is reachable exclusively by river, on a fascinating boat cruise of about 36 hours along the Rio Negro and the Rio Jauaperi, departing from Manaus.
Visitors are welcomed in the Xixuau community and hosted in the traditional Malocas, comfortable wooden huts built in Waimiri-Atroari Indian style. The structures are equipped with double rooms, private bathrooms, private patio, electricity, mosquito nets. The communal Maloca includes a living area, library and bar. Internet connection and a specialised local guide always available.
A stay in the Reserve includes excursions into the forest and canoe trips, the observation of various wild animals including howler monkeys, tapirs, sloths, jaguars, turtles, otters and river dolphins, camping in particularly evocative forest areas, bird watching, night excursions to spot caimans, and several traditional activities in close contact with the local community.
Visiting the Xixuau region means immersing yourself in the most authentic reality of the Amazon, getting to know the beauty of the rainforest through the experience of its inhabitants, their traditions and their history. Responsible-tourism activities represent an important source of income for the Xixuau community and make it possible to greatly improve the quality of life of the local inhabitants through sustainable development projects, healthcare and schooling assistance, and environmental conservation programmes.
The participation fee for the trip is 100 euros per day per person and includes: hotel-port shuttle (return), river transport Manaus-Xixuau Reserve (return), board and lodging, all activities and excursions, a personal guide, internet connection, and a contribution to the Xixuau community for sustainable development projects.
