The story

A trip to New Zealand wouldn't be complete without seeing Milford Sound. Located in the south-west of the South Island, it lies in Fiordland National Park. The 16-kilometre length from the head of the fjord to the open sea is flanked by rock walls that rise 1,200 metres from the water. It is often described as one of the most beautiful places on Earth. But there is much more than ethereal beauty; here are four surprising and interesting facts you probably didn't know about Milford Sound:

1Milford Sound is not a sound

It is actually a fjord. It was named this way in recognition of its geographical features. This great ocean inlet is a little bigger than a bay and is flanked by rock walls and majestic peaks. However, sounds are formed when a river valley is flooded by the sea, whereas Milford Sound was carved out by erosion from ancient glacial ice.

2It is one of the wettest places on Earth

Milford Sound exceeds New Zealand's metre of rain. Annual rainfall is anchored at 6,813 mm and it rains on about 182 days a year. The highest recorded rainfall in a single day is 250 mm. September, October, November and December are the wettest months at Milford Sound, averaging 16-18 days of rain per month. But don't let this put you off; Milford Sound is even more magical when the rains come. It amplifies the already powerful waterfalls and creates hundreds of temporary ones that cascade down the rock walls in a fury of power and beauty.

3The crowds love Milford Sound

Being one of New Zealand's most iconic scenes. Around 14,000 people a year arrive on foot along the Milford Track. There are many activities for visitors to enjoy at Milford Sound. The fjord cruise is always the most popular activity. Southern Discoveries, Milford Sound's oldest and most established tour company with 50 years of experience, offers scenic and nature cruise options. For those who love learning or who are travelling with children in tow, you might want to stop by the Milford Discovery Centre and the underwater observatory.

4The water is ink-black

The fjord is hundreds of metres deep, but that isn't the only thing that gives it its dark look. It is really a combination of darkened fresh water and seawater. During one of the many rains that occur in the area, water drains from the lush forests surrounding Milford Sound and washes down a tannin that colours the water the colour of strong tea. There are about 6 metres of fresh water sitting on top of the ocean water, which blocks the light.
