The first time in Alaska The United flight, a Boeing 757 of United Airlines, lands in Anchorage in the dark, the runway is icy and all white, it brakes only with its engines, then it bounces on the ice while we taxi to the gate. Vanni and I were coming from Hawaii and here it's minus 10, quite a temperature swing. We sleep at the Best Western and the next morning we rent a car, white, without meaning to, so we're even more camouflaged. We head out to the outskirts of the city, which I recall is not the capital. We try the magnificent experience of riding on dog-drawn sleds, wonderful, they zoom along in silence and the white world around you seems surreal. In the evening we go shopping in the heated city and the next day a flight to the warmth, to Los Angeles.
