I passed through Maryland together with three travel companions in a car rented in New York. We were coming from Lancaster in Pennsylvania and were heading to Washington in the District of Columbia as a stop on a long tour of North America (see the related itineraries). On the motorway we bypassed Baltimore, crossed a green park and reached the District of Columbia, preceded by the outskirts of Washington. The next day, returning to Washington from Mount Vernon in Virginia, we covered a stretch of the road that runs along the banks of the Potomac river, whose waters mark the border between Virginia and Maryland. Also the forest beyond the Potomac river that can be seen from the hill where Washington's house at Mount Vernon stands is Maryland territory.
Given that the border between the two states is not in the middle of the river and that the waters belong entirely to Maryland, the small pier of Mount Vernon is also in Maryland.
