Do-it-yourself trip. Annoyed by some tour operators who kept offering us holidays in Florida paired with excursions to Mexico or Cuba (in September notoriously at the mercy of typhoons!!), at exorbitant prices too, a fellow adventurer and I decided to first book a very convenient British Airlines flight at 478 euros Catania/London/JFK NY/London/Catania, and then to plan our invasion of the territory on paper. Departure 8 September and return 20/9. On both the outbound and the return there was a problem with the connecting flight in London, with an airport change between Heathrow and Gatwick, where we spent the last night of the trip. We decided to set as fixed points the visits to Washington, Boston and Niagara Falls (2 nights in each city), and New York (where we spent the remaining days). Car hired with Avis. Cheap but decent accommodation; the one in New York was very far out.

Including flight, hotels, car hire and petrol, we spent about 1,200 euros each. I wish everyone a trip to the States, to live for a few days the experience of being an actor on the set of a great film.

Day 110 Sep 2008

Washington - a bit of American history

the tour of the city is short, from the White House to the Lincoln Memorial, to the Space Museum, or the Science Museum, etc. One day is enough. and certainly not the most exciting among those you can spend in America. I would have preferred to devote more time to Philadelphia, which instead I saw only in the evening.

Boston - the America closest to the Channel

a city that surprises you with its style, its colors, its tranquility. don't miss a boat trip out to sea in search of whales, or a visit to the market. For those who want to learn about the history without having to rely on a guide.. follow the red stripe.... and be careful not to lose it!!

the Niagara Falls

don't miss the boat trip, or the excursion through the tunnels that lead right up close to the waterfall.

Day 416 Sep 2008

the Big Apple

for strolling I prefer Battery Park to Central Park. museums? at the Guggenheim and the MoMA I prefer The MET. for shopping? never stop at the first store.. the second one might offer you better prices; I recommend Chelsea Outlet, in Woburn, just a few minutes from NY. don't miss? the view of the city from the top of the Empire State Building, or from the Rockefeller Centre. entertainment? just wander around downtown.. everything you can find in the world is packed into a few square kilometers. don't miss? a basketball game at Madison Square Garden. For the rest... a Lonely Planet guide is enough
