A brief taste of the Big Apple

Day 117 Jul 2007

The beginning of a dream

Finally, after so much effort for the preparations for our wedding, the day we had been waiting for arrived, the crowning of a dream. Departure from Malpensa with Delta Airlines, destination: the Big Apple. After an 8-hour flight we arrive at JFK. Here, after losing more than an hour to the super checks, we take a taxi (55$) and have ourselves taken to the New York Palace, the hotel is luxurious in the heart of Manhattan (between Madison and 50th St) where we will spend the first night of our trip.

After a refreshing shower and a nap we walk along the legendary 5th Avenue heading south until we reach Times Square. On the way we discover Bryant Park where in the middle of the park there are chairs and tables where New Yorkers relax or study with their laptops. It's dark by now and the thousand lights of the signs blind us, we take Broadway for a short stretch and from here we head back north.

It's time to have dinner and in this area the choice is vast, from ethnic cuisine to pizzas. We settle for a place where they make custom salads and the possibilities are almost infinite; unfortunately the tiredness sets in, it's now 10:00 pm, we've been on our feet since 6:00 am and adding 6 hours of time difference it would be 4:00 am! We head toward our hotel and along the way we pass the Rockefeller Center. We arrive at the NY Palace and here too the scenery is no less, in fact the hotel is located right in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the building is half from the 1800s. We're exhausted and luckily we have a king-size bed that is nothing short of fantastic!

Day 218 Jul 2007

Bad luck!

We get up at 9:00 and... surprise!! damn....IT'S RAINING! We had planned a trip with the Circle Line to see the Statue of Liberty from the ferry and the Brooklyn Bridge, and instead everything had to be canceled. So we decide to go shopping and to megastores. Here near the hotel you find all the most luxurious stores in NY and megastores like Disney, Sony, Apple, etc. we also manage to visit a slice of Central Park. Finally it stops raining; so we decide to take a taxi and have ourselves taken near the Brooklyn Bridge. Here the area is much dirtier and the air doesn't smell good, so just the time for two photos and we have ourselves taken back. After a nice combination plate (steak, fries and salad), we head to the hotel and from there we leave for the airport (about 45 min. by taxi). Bye Bye New York, at 5:45 pm we leave with Air Tahiti Nui heading for Papeete....
