ISTANBUL
It is definitely one of the most surprising cities in the world. A mix of ancient and modern, of many colours and many cultures. Worth visiting: Topkapi Palace, Süleymaniye Mosque, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Underground Cistern. Don't miss a wander through the Grand Bazaar (allow at least 2-3 hours); haggling over prices is "compulsory".
CAPPADOCIA
Cappadocia is truly one of the most surreal landscapes in the world. You'll find yourself before a canyon where you'll admire entire valleys of tuff shaped by water and wind. Also worth admiring are the "Fairy Chimneys", tuff pinnacles topped with a cap of basalt — you'll wonder how they stay upright (every now and then, in fact, one collapses). Worth visiting are the rock-hewn houses and churches carved into the mountain. Don't miss a visit to an underground city.

The Mediterranean in all its splendour
EPHESUS
Ephesus is undoubtedly the best preserved of all the Roman cities in Turkey. Getting around the ruins takes at least half a day, so if you come in summer start early in the morning because by lunchtime the excessive heat will stop you going on. You'll also see the imposing Harbour Gymnasium, the mighty Temple of Hadrian, and above all the beautiful Library of Celsus.
PAMUKKALE
The petrified waterfalls of Pamukkale are a breathtaking sight. You can admire them on arrival from the valley below. They can be visited during the day, naturally barefoot, so watch out for slipping in the pools of water.
