Here we are in Jordan, having set off from Damascus by car driven by an excellent Palestinian, Karim, who also helped us handle the brief customs formalities, complicated by the fact that among the border police — the Syrian ones in particular — very few speak English. Anyway, we arrived in Amman in the late morning, where we stayed one night, and the following morning we picked up our 4x4 and set off for Petra, then on towards Wadi Rum, and back to Madaba, where we stayed and used as a base for the various excursions. It has to be said that the Jordanians have learned far better than the Syrians how to fleece tourists, but just outside the most famous destinations, and even in Amman itself, you can have dinner for three for less than 5 JD (€5.50). As for the guide, as in Syria, I advise it only for those who are truly expert.
