I don't know whether having never before considered the city of Liverpool as a destination to get to know and discover is part of some other traveller's approach too. I admit that if I hadn't ended up there for work, I would have gone of my own free will to the Beatles' home town only on the day Sampdoria had to play a Champions League match against Liverpool. Which is to say: never. But the fact that it was chosen as European Capital of Culture for 2008 must mean something. And indeed, if you are not weather-sensitive (here, being well to the north and close to the Atlantic, you must expect nothing but the typical grey "upholstery" for a sky...), the city has a charm all of its own. Typically British, revived after the industrial boom that marked it for almost a century, all flowing around its port and as liveable and fun as most English cities.
The Anglican cathedral, the Catholic one, the streets where the Beatles grew up artistically, the slavery museum are all points that make Liverpool a city absolutely to be lived and discovered.
